Ingredients

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (ready to roll)
  • 3-4 tbsp Strawberry jam( homemade or store-bought)
  • Fresh slices of strawberries
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp milk
  • 2-3 tbsp Superfine sugar or Caster sugar
  • 1 tbsp of Icing sugar/powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat Fan oven to 160C/330F (for conventional oven, 180C/356F).
  2. Unroll the puff pastry sheet and dust it with some plain flour if it is too sticky. Cut out the heart as much as possible using a medium-sized cookie cutter and place them on a baking paper lined baking tray.
  3. Next, use the smaller heart shape cookie cutter and gently make an impression of a heart in the middle of each larger heart. Press it gently because you only need an indention into the larger hearts.
  4. Spoon some strawberry jam in the middle part of each pastry heart (smaller one). Top it off with fresh slices of strawberries. Don’t overfill the hearts with jam as it may ooze out from the sides when baking.
  5. Brush the edges of hearts with an egg wash (whisk together 1 egg+ 1 tsp milk).
  6. Sprinkle some sugar on top to get the beautiful golden brown colour. You can also add a tsp of freeze-dried strawberry powder in sugar but it’s optional.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until flakey and golden brown in colour.
  8. Let them cool slightly then sprinkle some icing sugar/powdered sugar.
  9. Serve warm or chill them in the fridge before serving.
  10. Gather the puff pastry scrap and roll it again between two pieces of baking paper. Lightly sprinkle the flour if it is sticky. Cut out more hearts and repeat the process.
